Robin Gibson-Douthit

Certified Birth Doula & Certified Childbirth Educator

The word 'doula' comes from ancient Greece and translated means 'servant'.  A doula is a woman experiences in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a birthing woman before, during and after her labor.

"Words cannot say how much I love and appreciate Robin.  When I found out that I was pregnant I had no idea what to expect and was truly scared of what was to come in the next 9 months.  Robin was with me every step of the way to answer any questions, educate me on what I could expect at each milestone of the pregnancy and was the beautiful calm during my delivery.  She was always just a phone call away and I could count on her for incredible tips to help ease discomfort during tough stages of pregnancy.  Above all, she respected my wishes to have a mix of both holistic and traditional birthing options and worked with me to come up with a birth plan that I was happy with.  I fully understood all of my medical options as well as the risks of them before going into labor and for that I am beyond grateful.  Robin is a well educated, soft spoken, peaceful soul as well as a blessing to have as a Doula.  I highly recommend her for any mother to be."

"Robin was simply invaluable to us during the births of our son Eamon and our daughter, Maeve.  Her calm demeanor combined with her knowledge and wisdom helped Mark and me stay focused and positive.  I am convinced that her advice, aid, and her very presence are largely responsible for my having a positive birth experience.  I cannot imagine going through childbirth without her!"

"Hey Robin,  I just wanted to pop you a quick line to say thank you for teaching the Accelerated class this weekend.  I have to tell you, I ended up getting so much more than I even remotely anticipated out of the class.  Being the daughter of an L&D/PP Nurse, I felt like I grew up learning a lot, but there's a lot you don't learn about until you end up there having the experience of pregnancy and anticipating an impending birth. My husband and I have been going back and forth about the epidural since week 8, I feel like.  He's very pro-natural birth, and I can honestly tell you that before your class, I had never even considered the idea of having an un-medicated birth...  Epidural was etched into my vocabulary by age 6, I think.  And I think that's one of the reasons I was so terrified of the idea of birth.  A lot of it is unknown until you're in it.  This weekend made me realize that I was doing myself a disservice by not even considering the alternative to a medicated delivery.  If things didn't go according to "plan", I wouldn't have been prepared for that, and it could have been a really bad thing.  Your class really got me thinking, researching, and interested in how far I can let my body go through this on its own like it's meant to do.  It's still a little scary, but now, in a good and exciting way. :)  I really just wanted to say thank you for sharing information in such a fun and reassuring way.  I had a really great time in your class, and my husband left with more information than even he anticipated on how to be a supportive partner. I couldn't believe he was asking so many questions.  You were awesome, and if I could take your class more times over, I totally would. :)"    - Stephanie S.

"I just wanted to thank you for a great, educational and fun weekend. It was a lot of information, but it was presented in such a digestible way that we left feeling prepared and not overwhelmed. You put us at ease and so I wanted to say thanks for your knowledge, patience and understanding. You're really wonderful." - Katy H.

"I wanted to let you know that Mitch and I used everything you taught us while I was in labor last week--thank you! It was very helpful to be so informed and prepared." - Rachel D. M.

"Robin Douthit is an amazing instructor! This is my and my husband's first baby - we are so excited and nervous. Robin gave us a lot of information; she is humorous and straight forward and has many many encouraging words and wise tips. This has helped us begin to have a conversation about various details we previously overlooked, and also to rethink some issues. I really appreciated how she stayed in tune with what specifically our class was most curious about. I highly recommend this instructor - it's obvious she has years of practice and has a deep knowledge of the most pertinent concerns parents have." - Susan  B.

"We wanted to thank you for everything - your calm, reassuring nature and passion for what you do has given us so much confidence as we prepare for our big day. We will always remember you!" - Laura K.

"Your class was very instructive and helped us levied our doubts and questions. We're happy for being able to know our options and formulate our preferences. It was also very fun. We will recommend these classes to everyone expecting a baby" - Anissa B. and Alex L.

"Thanks for such a wonderful class experience this weekend - to be honest, I wasn't looking forward to attending a whole weekend long 7 hour day birth boot camp, Michelle signed me up, but it really exceeded my expectations; incredibly substantive and relevant. Your style felt personal /sensitive (pro patient!!) and also entertaining (the way you acted out certain scenes) and most importantly, I feel a lot more prepared and also know the areas of where I might need to ask more questions if they come up.
Working with you was just so refreshing. I am actually excited about the whole experience now, rather than fearful. If we hadn't already gone with our Doula (who is also great btw), I would definitely have loved to have considered you." - Marcus C. and Michelle C.

"I just wanted to email you to say thank you so much for the incredible childbirth preparation class this weekend. Preston and I left each day feeling like we had learned so much, and as a result feel more prepared (and less anxious too!). Thanks for sharing your expertise! We really appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions and for just being all-around wonderful." - Katy G. and Preston G.

"Thank you again for all your help and guidance during our childbirth classes.  Delivery was just under an hour so we didn't get to use many of the comfort measures we practiced but we did feel very good about understanding the intervention-free delivery process! Thank you again and hope all is well!" - Sarah T.

"Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend. You are an excellent and dynamic educator, and Phil and I were so thankful to have been in your class. We learned so much, and feel confident going forward." -   Julia P. and Phil A.

"Robin, thank you for preparing us for what is to come, what options are available to us and sharing your perspectives and opinions.  I really found it helpful that you provided a number of resources we can use to do our own research and offered questions we could ask our OBGYN so we can be our own advocates and ensure we get the care we want and expect when we are in labor." - C.L.

We felt so comfortable and inspired learning from you and now feel very excited and confident about the next phase of this journey into parenthood! "I just have to tell you that Tommy and I cannot stop talking about how wonderful your class was this weekend - it was informative, engaging, straight to the point and most of all reassuring. Before that class I was of the mindset that I NEED the epidural as soon as I walk into the hospital and my biggest fear was not being able to get one if the baby comes too fast. Given the information we now know and the comfort techniques you provided and spent time practicing with us, I now feel less scared. So again, thanks to you, I walked out of there a different person. I feel confident, prepared and most of all, no longer terrified of what's ahead!" - Charlene N. and Tommy C.

“Ed and I wanted to thank you for an amazing weekend. Your approach to teaching is informative, real and without judgement. It is obvious that you love contributing to first time parents and there is no doubt that this is your calling. We both feel much more comfortable and can accept the way our son will enter this world (singing Iron Maiden! Haha).” - Kate D. and Ed B.

“We welcomed our son on March 6th! Mark was an incredible support person through the 21 hours of labor and the NYU Langone nurses were also so wonderful. Made it through with no epidural, and my recollection of transition is already a hazy memory :) !! Thank you so much for your informative and empowering class and presence— you made us feel like we could do it, and we did!!” - Debbie S. and Mark R.

“I can't tell you how many things during delivery I thought of that you had said.  I really feel we went in prepared” - Demetri G. and Karolina P.

“Thank you so much for setting us up for success! We really enjoyed your classes! I really appreciated going every week and then having focused questions for my doctors visits. Plus we made the decision to get a doula after visiting your classes, which we probably wouldn't have done otherwise! Thank you for your wisdom and advice!” - Emma R. and Ger F.

‘We want to thank you for being such a wonderful and integral part of Daisy’s birth. You completely allayed all of our fears and nerves in the weeks leading up to the Big Day. You helped to bring us our beautiful little dumpling Daisy.” - Rebecca F. and Paul W.
